Greece vs Ivory Coast
A real surprise that Greece got through the group. They played their socks off in this match though and deserved the win.
They hit the woodwork two or three times and really pushed the Ivory Coast players to the max. Samaras scored the opening goal on the 42nd minute to give Greek hearts some hope.
Then in the 74th minute Wilfried Bony scored a powerful shot to put the Ivory Coast on their way to the last 16, for the first time.
The game continued with some pace as both teams looked fit but Greece kept on coming and in the 90th minute they were awarded a penalty. A bit of a soft one for me as it was more an accidental coming together but it did impede the shot.
Then came Samaras who hadn’t scored for his country in a few years until tonight and he bagged a brace. A HUGE goal for Greece but they were the better team.
Hard luck for the Ivory Coast team, especially given the Toure brothers loss. Kalou looked OK in parts and not even Drogba, their outstanding captain could see them through. On paper they were a good collection of players and they must be disappointed to be going home.
It ended Greece vs Ivory Coast (2-1).
Croatia vs Mexico
Croatia have been a little unlucky in this tournament. They were very hard done by to have lost against Brazil and with their outstanding midfield and for us they are a loss to the tournament.
Group A ended with Brazil winning it and Mexico (who have been great) finished second. Both teams knew the winner of this was going through so it was a pressure game.
This game ended with Mexico going through with a 3-1 win. Their forward line is strong and they have the potential, like many South American teams to do well here. The heat I think could be getting to people as it is the South American teams really hitting the high notes.
It was a hard hitting game as both teams knew what was at stake. Olic was as good as he has been and went close a few times. Herrera hit the post with a long range left footed shot as well so both teams would shoot.
Croatia had to win though and that was their problem. As time ticked on they needed to get on the score sheet but as Mexico pushed for the attack the Croatians became happy to go for the counter attack – that is what let them down.
The Mexico fans sang out to motivate their players as their super captain Marquez delivered. A defender stepped up and opened the scoring with a captain’s header. Then, the crowd went crazy singing their hearts out.
Mexico finish second and go through from Group A. It ended Croatia vs Mexico (1-3) and it was a good match.
